TEXTILE SOCIETY EVENT
Join curator Fiona Murrell as she explains how this exhibition reveals a fuller history of Paxton House and its previous owners’ links with slavery.
Parallel lives, worlds apart: from sugar plantations in Grenada to life at Court, and other stories from the costume at Paxton House.
The exhibition explores the parallel lives of several owners of Paxton House from the mid-18th century in Scotland, Europe, Virginia and Grenada and those whose lives were intertwined – enslaved African people, friends, and family descendants. Outstanding and unique European mid-18th century costume is on show alongside specially commissioned replica clothing to tell the real stories unearthed from the archives about individuals whose clothing does not survive.
This project has been supported by the Textile Society Museum, Archive and Conservation Award 2021.
Parallel lives, worlds apart shows at Paxton House, Berwick-upon-Tweed until October 2022.
Tickets: Members £5 / non-members £15
