The costume and textile collection was donated by Olive Matthews who begun amassing a unique and exquisite collection from childhood. Olive made most of her early purchases from the Caledonian Road Market where she befriended traders, delighting in finding bargains at a time when costumes were little valued as antiques. Join us to view two current exhibitions of her treasures in the galleries followed by a store visit.
A Stitch in Time. Some of the best items from the early 1600s through to the first half of the 20th century. Full garments, accessories, samplers and workboxes.
Dressed for Best. Clothing for formal and royal occasions, featuring the most lavish and spectacular garments from the Olive Matthews collection. Men’s and women’s clothing dating from the 1700s to the 1900s
